The annual increase in passengers number at Skopje Alexander the Great Airport and Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport in 2016 is 15%, which is higher than the EU average and the region’s average

1,8 million passengers have travelled through both Macedonian airports - Skopje Alexander the Great and Ohrid St. Apostle Paul Airport in 2016, announces TAV Macedonia, summarizing the traffic data for the past year.

-A total of 1.794.376 passengers have travelled through both Macedonian airports in 2016, with an annual increase of 15% compared with 2015, when we had 1.560.381 passengers. At the same time, the number of operations has been increased by 8,9%, to a total of 16.883 flights. We are satisfied we have managed to accomplish such a double digit increase in passenger’s number on an annual level, which is higher than EU average and higher than region’s average. We will continue in such direction in 2017 as well, focusing our main goals on the route network expansion at Skopje and Ohrid airports, cooperating with the Government, all involved institutions competent for aviation, and airlines, states Alper Ersoy, TAV Macedonia General Manager.

According to passenger traffic, Istanbul (both airports Ataturk and Sabiha Gokcen) is the most frequent destination from Skopje Alexander the Great Airport in 2016, with 12,6% market share, followed by Zurich with 10,2%, Vienna - 6,3%, Basel - 5%, Malmo - 4,8% and London with 4,3% market share.

Regarding airlines share in passenger traffic, Wizz Air transported the largest number of passengers with 54,8% market share, followed by Turkish Airlines, Austrian Airlines, Germania Flug, Pegasus Airlines and Edelweiss.

The most frequent day at Skopje Airport in 2016 was 12th of August, when through Skopje Airport travelled 5.641 passengers, while the number of total aircraft movements at that day was 50, followed by 21st of July when a total of 5.604 passengers were carried in one day through total of 51 aircraft movements.

Cargo traffic at Skopje Airport has a significant growth of 10,9% in 2016, with 3.090 tons total air cargo shipments transported. This increase is mostly due to the increased freight for export, but also the individual orders through internet transported by air were more popularized during the last year.

2016 was very successful for boosting the traffic at Ohrid Airport where an extraordinary passenger growth of 39,2% was made on an annual level, quarterly spotted by Airports Council International (ACI) in 2016 as the fastest growing airport in its category.

Besides the significant annual air traffic increase, last year is marked as succesful for TAV Macedonia also due to ASQ (Airport Service Quality) award Skopje Airport has received for the 3th time in the last 5 years, from ACI (Airports Council International) – being named as the Best Airport in Europe in terms of airport service quality, in the category of airports under 2 million passengers.

Covid19: Travel Safe

Aviation is a highly regulated industry due to the global character of the business. In Turkey, the precautions to be taken at airports against COVID-19 are defined in the “Airports Pandemic Precautions and Certification Circular”, issued by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (SHGM).
